Inland Division General Motors | U.S. M1 Carbine | .30 Carbine | WWII Military Semi-Automatic Rifle | April 1943 Barrel The U.S. M1 Carbine is one of the most recognizable American military firearms of World War II. Developed as a lightweight, semi-automatic alternative to the standard service rifle, the M1 Carbine was widely issued to American military personnel during WWII and continued in service through the Korean War and beyond. This example was manufactured by the Inland Division of General Motors, the largest producer of M1 Carbines during World War II. Inland manufactured approximately 2.6 million carbines under U.S. government contracts, making it the leading manufacturer of this historic military rifle. Bearing serial number 356628, this carbine falls within Inland's early WWII production range. The barrel is marked “INLAND MFG. DIV. GENERAL MOTORS 4-43,” indicating an April 1943 barrel manufacture date. The early receiver serial number and period-consistent barrel date make this an appealing example of Inland's wartime production. The rifle retains several desirable early M1 Carbine configuration features, including the two-aperture flip rear sight, push-button safety, and narrow barrel band without a bayonet lug. The rifle also features an early-style flat-top bolt, consistent with the design used during the initial production years of the M1 Carbine. The rifle features a traditional wooden military stock, appearing to be an early high-wood configuration, with an “IO” marking inside the sling well. This marking is associated with stock production for Inland carbines. The right side of the stock displays a U.S. Ordnance crossed-cannons cartouche, while the underside of the pistol grip bears a circled “P” proof marking. The upper handguard features early two-rivet construction, another characteristic consistent with the rifle's wartime configuration. Included is a standard 15-round steel M1 Carbine magazine, marked “AI” on the back. The AI marking is associated with Autotyre Company, a WWII magazine supplier for Inland Division carbines. The rifle is also accompanied by a military-style canvas sling and a detachable M3-pattern flash hider, marked “HIDER-FLASH-M3-SA.” The flash hider is a separate muzzle accessory and is not permanently attached to the barrel. The combination of an early Inland receiver, April 1943 Inland barrel, flip rear sight, push-button safety, narrow barrel band, flat-top bolt, two-rivet handguard, and IO-marked stock gives this carbine considerable historical interest. These features are consistent with early WWII production, although the rifle's complete originality has not been established. There is a noticeable gouge on the left side of the pistol grip, measuring approximately 1" x 1/2", along with a thin crack on the right side of the stock near the receiver and bolt area. The stock retains visible crossed-cannons and circled P markings, along with the IO marking inside the sling well. The bore is shiny.
