Springfield Armory | M1A Standard | 7.62 NATO / .308 Winchester | Semi-Automatic Rifle | 22" Barrel The Springfield Armory M1A is an American-made, semi-automatic rifle based on the legendary U.S. military M14 rifle. Introduced commercially in 1974 by Springfield Armory, Inc. of Geneseo, Illinois, the M1A retains the traditional appearance, operating system, and handling characteristics of the military M14 while utilizing a civilian semi-automatic configuration. This example is an early-production Springfield Armory M1A, serial number 034042, believed to date to the early-to-mid-1980s. The receiver bears the traditional markings “U.S. Rifle, 7.62-MM M1A” and “Springfield Armory.” These markings reflect the rifle's military-inspired design rather than actual U.S. military service. The rifle features the traditional 22" barrel configuration, an M14-style flash suppressor, and a walnut hardwood stock with a contrasting brown synthetic upper handguard. The stock retains the traditional military-style profile and is fitted with a hinged steel buttplate, incorporating the folding shoulder rest commonly associated with the M14 design. The M1A utilizes a gas-operated, rotating-bolt action with a detachable box magazine. Its operating system follows the established M14 pattern, incorporating a short-stroke gas piston, reciprocating operating rod, and traditional receiver-mounted controls. The rifle is equipped with M14-style adjustable iron sights, consisting of a protected front blade sight and an adjustable rear aperture (peep) sight with separate windage and elevation adjustments. This traditional sighting arrangement is one of the defining characteristics of the M1A platform. The bolt is marked “7790185 SA RRR.” This marking is associated with Springfield Armory-pattern components, although the bolt's exact military or commercial origin has not been independently established. No visible manufacturer markings were identified on the operating rod or trigger housing, and no military inspection cartouches were observed on the stock. The rifle is accompanied by two unmarked 20-round steel M14/M1A-pattern magazines, one 10-round Magpul PMAG, and a green canvas sling. With its early serial number, traditional military-style furniture, hinged buttplate, and classic M14-pattern configuration, this M1A represents an appealing example of Springfield Armory's earlier commercial production.
