Introduced in 2011, the 5.25 Competition Series was designed specifically for competitive shooting, incorporating an extended barrel and slide, enhanced sighting system, and refined trigger characteristics. The XD(M) platform evolved from the original Springfield XD series, which originated from the Croatian-designed HS2000 pistol. The XD(M) introduced improvements in ergonomics, grip texture, trigger operation, and barrel construction, along with interchangeable backstraps to accommodate different hand sizes. The 5.25 Competition Series was developed with input from professional shooter Rob Leatham, a longtime Springfield Armory competitor and multiple-time national and world shooting champion. The XD(M) utilizes a short-recoil, locked-breech operating system and a striker-fired trigger mechanism.
