Taurus | PT92AF | 9mm Luger | 5" Barrel | Black Finish | Semi-Automatic Pistol The Taurus PT92AF is a full-size, Brazilian-manufactured semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9mm Luger, developed from the renowned Beretta Model 92 design. Its origins trace to 1980, when Taurus purchased Beretta's former manufacturing facility in São Paulo, Brazil, along with its machinery, tooling, technical specifications, and experienced workforce. This acquisition provided Taurus with the foundation to produce its own version of the Beretta 92, leading to the introduction of the PT92 series in the early 1980s. Although closely related to the Beretta 92, the Taurus PT92 evolved into a distinctive handgun with several notable mechanical differences. Most significantly, Taurus retained the frame-mounted manual safety, rather than adopting the slide-mounted safety arrangement used on later Beretta 92 variants. Subsequent PT92 developments introduced an ambidextrous safety/decocking system, allowing the pistol to be carried with the hammer lowered or in a cocked-and-locked configuration. The PT92AF also incorporates a firing-pin safety, adding another layer of protection against unintended discharge. Mechanically, the PT92AF utilizes a short-recoil operating system with a falling locking block, allowing the barrel to remain nearly horizontal during cycling. Its open-top slide design, exposed hammer, and traditional double-action/single-action trigger system reflect its military-service pistol heritage. The lightweight aluminum-alloy frame helps balance the substantial steel slide, while the double-stack magazine provides generous ammunition capacity. Over its production history, the PT92 has remained one of Taurus's most recognizable centerfire pistols and a longstanding alternative to the Beretta 92 family.
