German Sport Guns | GSG-522 SD | .22 LR | Semi-Automatic Rifle | ATI Import The German Sport Guns (GSG) Model 522 SD is a German-manufactured, semi-automatic rimfire rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle, designed to replicate the distinctive appearance and handling characteristics of the famous Heckler & Koch MP5 SD platform. Manufactured by German Sport Guns and imported into the United States by American Tactical Imports (ATI), the GSG-522 series became popular among recreational shooters and enthusiasts seeking an MP5-inspired rifle chambered in economical .22 LR ammunition. The GSG-522 was introduced in 2010 as the successor to the earlier GSG-5 series, following a legal agreement involving German Sport Guns, ATI, and Heckler & Koch. Although the underlying rimfire operating system remained largely unchanged, the redesigned rifle incorporated several external improvements, including a revised safety selector, textured pistol grip, redesigned sights, and an updated magazine release. These changes helped distinguish the GSG-522 from its predecessor while preserving its recognizable tactical styling. The SD variation is distinguished by its oversized cylindrical barrel shroud, which gives the rifle the appearance of an integrally suppressed MP5 SD. The shroud is a cosmetic barrel covering rather than a functional sound suppressor, surrounding a conventional rifled barrel. The rifle utilizes a blowback-operated semi-automatic action, with a charging handle positioned toward the front of the receiver and a detachable box magazine. Its lightweight rimfire operating system and MP5-inspired controls make the GSG-522 SD an interesting example of the tactical-style .22 LR rifles that gained popularity during the early 2010s.
