Smith & Wesson | Model 637-2 Airweight | .38 Special +P | 1⅞" Barrel | Double-Action Revolver The Smith & Wesson Model 637-2 Airweight is a lightweight, five-shot revolver chambered in .38 Special +P, combining the traditional design of Smith & Wesson's J-frame revolvers with modern materials and manufacturing improvements. Its lineage traces back to the Chiefs Special, introduced in 1950 as a compact five-shot revolver intended primarily for law enforcement and personal defense. Smith & Wesson subsequently developed the aluminum-framed Model 37 Chiefs Special Airweight, reducing the weight of the original design while retaining its familiar handling characteristics. Introduced in the 1990s, the Model 637 continued this tradition by pairing a lightweight aluminum-alloy frame with a stainless-steel barrel and cylinder, providing a practical combination of reduced weight and corrosion resistance. The 637-2 engineering variation incorporates later production updates while maintaining the exposed hammer and traditional double-action/single-action mechanism that distinguish it from Smith & Wesson's enclosed-hammer Centennial models. The Model 637-2 features a compact 1⅞" barrel, fixed sights, and a five-round swing-out cylinder. Its exposed hammer allows the revolver to be fired in double-action mode or manually cocked for single-action operation. The combination of a matte silver finish, lightweight construction, and traditional J-frame proportions has made the Airweight series a longstanding part of Smith & Wesson's revolver lineup.
