Developed as part of Smith & Wesson's innovative AirLite series, the Model 340PD represents a significant advancement in lightweight revolver construction, combining a scandium-alloy frame with a titanium cylinder to achieve an unloaded factory weight of approximately 11.8 ounces. This combination of advanced materials allowed Smith & Wesson to produce a remarkably compact magnum revolver while retaining the strength necessary for its powerful chambering. The AirLite series emerged during the early 2000s as manufacturers explored new alloys and lightweight metals to reduce the weight of traditional defensive handguns. Built on Smith & Wesson's compact J-frame platform, the Model 340PD features a 1⅞" barrel, concealed hammer, and double-action-only trigger system.
